Garments made from exclusive merino wool have a great fit, retain their shape and are easy to care for! At Cubus, you’ll find merino wool clothing for the whole family – ready to become your new favorites!
"Merino wool is known for its softness and fine fibers, making it especially suitable for wearing close to the skin and feeling ‘itch-free,’" explains Cubus’ Head of Sustainability, Christiane Fagertun.
The thickness of the wool fiber determines whether it feels itchy or not. This is measured in microns, and the "itch threshold" for wool is 25 microns.
"Wool with thick fibers is suitable for coats, outerwear, and pants, while fine merino wool, with its smooth, fine fibers, is perfect for wearing close to the skin."
What Is Merino Wool?
Merino wool comes from the merino sheep, which graze on vast grasslands. The merino sheep originated in Spain, but today, most of the world’s merino wool is produced in New Zealand and Australia.
Merino wool is a natural material with unique properties. The fiber is lightweight yet warm. Wool is also the only material that retains warmth even when wet! Merino is an active fiber, which gives it temperature-regulating properties. The fibers respond to changes in your body temperature, helping to keep you warm in cold weather and cool in warm weather.
What’s the Difference Between Merino Wool and Regular Wool?
Traditional wool has shorter fibers than merino wool. The longer fibers are what make merino wool feel soft and comfortable, making it ideal for wearing directly on the skin.
There are many types of wool available on the market besides "regular" wool and merino wool. The type of wool depends on several factors, from the time of year the sheep are sheared, to the breed of sheep, and where the wool is sourced from on the sheep.
Quality, Trend, and Investment
Wool—especially the soft merino wool—has become increasingly popular in fashion in recent years.
"We see the trend moving toward more classic fashion. Many people are talking about long-lasting products and creating a perfect wardrobe by choosing quality over quantity," says Cubus knitwear designer, Lisa Ask.
As the trend shifts towards quality and investment, merino wool, as a natural fiber, becomes the ultimate choice.
"The properties of merino fibers—both warm and durable—give the garment a practical function, not just an aesthetic value. Merino wool is soft and has a luxurious finish, making it perfect for something you can wear to work, to a party—or even on a hike," says Ask.

Merino Wool for All Ages
At Cubus, you’ll find wool underwear made from luxurious merino wool. We offer leggings and t-shirts, but also briefs and bras made from this soft material.
Merino wool is an excellent choice for underwear for both adults and children because wool absorbs and wicks moisture away from the skin. Wool can "breathe" and absorb up to 35% of its own weight in moisture during activity, keeping your skin dry and comfortable.
"This means that it keeps you warm even if you get wet or sweaty," says Cubus senior underwear designer, Linda Helene Raanæs Rosèn.
Wool contains lanolin, a natural fat with antibacterial properties. This helps prevent odors, making wool perfect for underwear and socks. Wool bras are a great choice for nursing mothers, as wool wicks moisture away from the skin and helps prevent mastitis. Merino wool is also a good match for sensitive baby skin.
Animal Welfare
Cubus aims to improve animal welfare in our industry by setting strict standards for ourselves and our suppliers.
Cubus has a ban on mulesing. Mulesing is a procedure in which two pieces of skin are cut away from the sheep’s hindquarters without anesthesia. This is done to prevent issues with dirty wool, which can attract fly larvae. The merino wool in Cubus products is certified. This means Cubus will not purchase merino wool unless there is approved documentation that the sheep come from farms that do not practice mulesing. The removal of merino wool must be done in a humane way by a qualified person.
Some of our wool collections are certified by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). The Responsible Wool Standard is a global certification system that ensures good animal welfare practices. They also provide guidelines for sustainable management of the grazing land.
